What Creating a Wiki Page is Really Like

The concept of making something that can be seen by millions on such a large platform is an exciting thing. In creating a wiki page, anyone is able to do just that no matter what their interests or level of experience is. Creating one’s own wiki page is something that will almost certainly pose some challenges. Despite these challenges, however, making a wiki page can also be quite a rewarding experience.

The most challenging part for some could be finding a topic that has not already been written about. Since wikiHow already has such a vast selection of topics and content that have been written about, it can be difficult to create a unique page that will stand on its own and will not be interfered with on the wiki platform. It may also seem challenging to think of a topic that will draw interest from internet users. However, chances are if a topic is useful to one person, it will be useful to another person. It is not an impossible task, and after a topic is chosen, one of the more stress-inducing parts of creating a wiki seems to be over.

Personal experience is something else that can be helpful in many aspects of your wiki. Topics that have a personal tie, such as a family recipe or a tip or trick that was created on one’s own will lessen the chances that a topic would already have been picked. Making a wiki based on personal experience also gives the creator of the wiki ample knowledge of the topic, and will make it easier to communicate to the audience tips, hints, or warnings that could be helpful and relevant.

The topic for the attached wikiHow “How to Refresh Box Braids” came from personal experience. It was a topic that could be useful to many people and would be an easy topic to clearly portray and follow a step-by-step instruction of. Ensuring that the topic would be something that would be followed in step-by-step directions is something else that may be important to consider, seeing that a step-by-step instructional could be more straightforward and simple, especially for a first time creator.

There are many ways that wikis can be communicated to an audience. Photos are a major way to communicate to an audience, especially when it comes to a wikiHow article where the audience is being shown how to do something. It is important that the pictures are clear in portraying the steps as best as possible. Taking the pictures for the project could prove to be more difficult than it seems if there are no other people there to assist. Doing the task properly all while trying to take the pictures yourself is no easy feat. Having somebody else either performing the task or taking the pictures of the wiki author performing the task could make for a less stressful experience and a better outcome for the pictures. It was assumed that doing the task for the article, “How to Refresh Box Braids” and taking the pictures for the wiki would be one of the easier aspects of the project. Had the difficulties of doing the task and trying to take quality photos had been recognized or considered earlier, a second person probably would’ve been utilized to assist in the picture taking.

It may be surprising to find that it is possible to consider an easier part of creating a wiki to be coding the page. The ability for anyone with an account to edit any article on the site means that it is not necessary to know the ins and outs of coding to get the job done. Once an account is made on the wiki platform, any user is able to edit a page. This makes it easy to find a guide to code one’s own page, even without any prior experience with coding.

There may be instances where the wiki code is not perfect, especially if someone is not familiar with coding already. In the article attached, the pictures were not posted uniformly, some were posted above the directions in the step and some were posted underneath. It took a bit of manipulating the code to get the page to look neat in its appearance. Other than that little glitch, there were no other major issues when it came to coding or publishing this specific article.

While creating a wiki is something that may seem a bit daunting at first, once the project is started, it becomes easier to manage and the final result should be one that a creator is proud of.
